Realistic tabby cat face on a foot

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A tabby cat's face with large blue eyes and a green bow tie fills the top of a foot, with the toes visible below. The tattoo uses smooth shading and fine fur detail in browns, greys and cream, with soft teal shading behind the head. The image is a close, straight-on photograph against a white towel.

Sit down, sit, and mind the kettle, because this is the part where the old tom comes down the gangway at Dover with a green bow tie and not one scrap of paperwork. Ginger Pinch, the customs men called him, though his fur was more the colour of wet bark and strong tea, and he had the wide blue eyes of a cat who has been told a great deal and believed none of it.

The papers were the trouble. A tabby cannot carry a passport, so the woman who owned him, Mrs Adaeze Hollin from Gravesend, had sewn his photograph into the lining of her coat and hoped for the best. The officer at the desk, a young man with a streaming cold, looked at the photograph, then at the cat, then at the photograph again. 'He's looking at me as if I owe him money,' he said. 'Does he always look like that?' 'Only when he's been promised a fish,' said Mrs Hollin, and that was the end of the interview.

Now here is the thing nobody tells you about borders. The cat was never the one crossing. He had gone ahead on the Tuesday ferry, curled in a tin of loose tea in the hold, and by the time the officer had finished sneezing, the bow tie had been tied and the cat was asleep on a windowsill in Rotterdam, purring at a harbour that had never once asked to see his papers.

Mrs Hollin took the next boat with the photograph still in her coat. The customs men never found the cat's own opinion of the matter, which I am told was that the sea had been very grey and the herring worse, and he still chooses the window seat in every hotel he stays at, waiting for the water to tell him where he is.
