The cold in the hangar of Ostrava Ring gets into your teeth, and you have been polishing the same brass knuckle plate for three shifts. Mirela from the night crew keeps leaning over your shoulder to say the foundry light makes you look like a corpse. The gauntlet on the cradle is not yours. A salvage contractor pulled it from a debris field past Kepler Reach, paid you in cash, and left one warning: keep the stones out of direct light, because they drink it.

You do the job anyway, because the wages are the best you have ever seen and the rent on the lower decks is overdue. Six sockets, six gems, each the colour of a different sunset: violet, amber, a red that looks wet. You set the orange one last. When it seats, the bulkhead lamps dip and the room fills with a slow pulse, like something breathing through a wall. Mirela drops her wrench. Above you, a viewport that has been dark since the blockade starts to show stars, and they are drifting towards the glass in neat, deliberate rows.

The figure bolted to the wrist plate, gold helmet and grinning purple face, turns a fraction of an inch while nobody is looking. You tell yourself the contractor's paperwork called it decorative. You tell Mirela to pull the main cable. She does not move, because her hands are full of light. So you close the gauntlet yourself, and the stars wink out one by one, and the invoice on the bench still has a blank line for disposal.
