Mountain and moon in a diamond frame

Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A geometric diamond outline encloses a peaked mountain drawn with fine linework and stippled dotwork shading. A pale moon with soft blue-grey shading sits above the peak, inside a dotted circle that touches the top point of the diamond. The design is centred on bare skin, with a person's hands holding an open shirt at either side of the frame.

The theodolite had been sulking since Tuesday, so Mr Halloran sent me up Scarth Fell with a tin of pencils and instructions to stop complaining. I was nineteen and had never been higher than the chapel roof. By four o'clock the sheep had gone quiet and the valley below had turned the colour of weak tea.

My father had surveyed these hills for thirty years and never once drew them the way they looked. He drew them as diamonds, he said, because a mountain is only a triangle that has been left out in the weather. I thought that was nonsense until I reached the saddle and saw the peak sitting square in the middle of the sky, a pale moon already hanging just above its shoulder like a coin someone had forgotten to pocket.

I sat on the wet stone and did what he taught me. I pricked a dot at each corner of the view, then ringed the moon with a compass so the line would close on the summit. The dots went on and on, one by one, until the ridges had shadow and the sky had blue at its edge. It took an hour and my fingers went numb, but the page began to look less like a map and more like a window with the weather pinned to it.

When I got back to the office Mr Halloran held the sheet to the lamp and said nothing for a long time. Then he handed me the ink and told me to draw the diamond round it, the way my father always had. I did. Outside, the real moon had cleared the fell, and for once it sat exactly where I had put it.
