Geometric fox on upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A faceted fox head and body are drawn in black linework, with the ears, face and tail built from angular planes that resemble folded paper. Fine hatching on the right side of the body and tail adds shading, while the left side is left largely open. The black and white photograph is taken from behind, centred on the tattoo against smooth skin and a wooden wall in the background.

Sit closer, where the lamp reaches you, because this one goes wrong if the listener is cold. There was a fox that lived in the folds of a letter. Not a real fox, mind, the kind that steals hens. This one was made from a single square of paper torn from the top of a dead man's ledger, so it knew sums and kept count of everything it was given.

Teodor the paper-folder found it at the back of his shop one winter, when the river had frozen up against the mill wheel. He had been folding for forty years and had never once cut a line. He liked the fox because it had no face at first, only planes: a pointed roof for ears, a slant of candlelight down one flank where the edge caught, and the other flank left blank, as if the fox had not yet decided what it owed the world.
It asked him one question each night. Where does the shadow go when the paper is unfolded? Teodor never knew. So each night he folded it smaller, and each morning it asked again, until by spring it was no bigger than a thumbnail and had learned to count his breaths.
On the last morning he opened it out on the bench and found the creases had become a map of the town, every street a hatched line, every house a sharp corner. The fox stood at the centre of the square with its blank side turned toward the river. "There," it said, quite pleasantly. "Now you know where the shadow goes. Fold yourself into it, and I'll keep the count."
Teodor laughed, and then he did not, and the lamp went out.
