Crystal heart with MYSELF banner on thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A heart made of faceted crystal clusters in pink, orange, yellow, green, turquoise and purple fills the centre, with a ribbon banner reading MYSELF across the top. Small four-point sparkles and a border of round pearl-like beads frame the heart. Bold black outlines and smooth colour blending give it a bright, glossy finish, shown on a skin-toned thigh against a plain background.

The officer at the crossing tipped the tin onto her steel counter, and the stones skittered out in a clatter under the strip lights: rose quartz, citrine, a bruised violet amethyst, and a green that had no business being so bright. Marta kept her hands flat on the rail. Her father had spent forty years buying rough crystals by the kilo from a widow in the hills, and now a woman with reading glasses on a chain was holding one up to the light as though she were a jeweller.

'Anything to declare?' the officer asked. 'They're for the shop,' Marta said. 'Cut stones?' 'Not yet. Dad always meant to cut them himself. He never got round to it.' The officer turned a pale turquoise piece over, then another, and her mouth softened. She slid a grey form across the counter and tapped a box with her pen. 'Name of the consignee?'

Marta looked at the form. Her father's name was painted over the shop door, printed on every invoice, and stencilled on the cutting wheel he had left in the back room under a dust sheet. She had been writing it for weeks. She picked up the pen and wrote her own name slowly, the letters leaning the way his always had, then crossed out the first attempt and began again.

'Myself,' she said. The officer laughed, a short surprised sound, and stamped the form twice. 'Well, that's a first.' Marta gathered the stones back into the tin one at a time, the pink and the green and the violet, and when the barrier lifted she carried them into the other country as if they were heavy, which they were not.
