Cure script on the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the single word cure written in flowing black script on the side of the ribcage. The linework is thin and even, with the letters joined in a cursive style. The skin is warm toned and lit from the front, and a grey fabric covers the upper part of the frame.

Mind the step, mind the step, there's always someone who forgets the gap at Thornleigh Halt, and it was always going to be a porter who fell through it. Now sit you down on that bench, the one with the iron scroll the rain has been working on for forty years, and I'll tell you about Ada Pennock and the tin of tonic she carried up from Lowmoor.

She sold the stuff from a leather case on the Tuesday train, a brown syrup in blue bottles, and on every label, in a looping hand she'd learned from a nun, was one word: cure. Folk bought it for coughs, for the bad knee, for the baby who wouldn't settle. Most of them swore it did something. The stationmaster swore it did nothing at all, and drank three bottles a week all the same.
Then came the winter the line flooded and the Tuesday train stopped running, and Ada was stuck on the platform with four hundred bottles and a boy from the signal box who'd caught a fever. She sat with him under the lamp, spooning syrup into him, reading the same two pages of a seed catalogue until the words blurred. On the third night he asked her what the word on the bottles meant. She told him it meant making whole. He said that was too big a word for a bottle. She said yes, that was rather the point of it.
He got up on the Thursday. Ada took the first engine through, and she never sold another bottle. The label, I'm told, still sits in a drawer in the signal box, curling at the edges, with that one word running across it like a train that hasn't decided where it's going.
