Outline heart on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single small heart drawn in a thin, unshaded black outline, slightly tilted, sits on the inner wrist. The linework is even and clean, with no fill or shading inside the shape. The plain light background keeps the focus on the tattoo and the skin around it.

Dear Nell,

The rain has been coming sideways down the market since Tuesday, and the tarpaulin over Stall Nine has given up on its back corner, so I've been standing under a bin bag with the teapot balanced on a crate. Mr Okafor from the fish stand says the council will fix the roof when the pigeons start paying rent. Nobody has paid anything since August.
Something odd happened on Thursday. A girl in a yellow mac stopped to shelter at my window and wiped a circle in the steam with her sleeve. Then she drew a heart in it with one finger, just the outline, tilted over as if it were leaning into the wind. She didn't fill it in. I asked her why not, and she said, "If you fill it, you have to say what it's for."
I've thought about that all weekend. Mum always filled hers in, remember, the big red ones on every birthday card, and look where that got the kitchen table. So this morning I tried it myself. I breathed on the glass and drew one the same way, thin and unshaded, and watched the drips run through its middle and close it up again.
I'm not sure what I was trying to say. Maybe that the empty ones are the honest kind. The rain took the whole row by eleven, and the stall smelt of wet cardboard and cloves. Come up on the train in March, if the roof holds. I'll leave the window clean for you, and you can draw the first one.
Love, Jo
