Cyclist silhouette within an infinity loop
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo shows a solid black silhouette of a cyclist leaning forward over a bicycle. The two wheels are drawn as a single infinity loop with thin, even outlines. The ink is black with slight grey softening, set against smooth skin on the upper back, with the design centred in the frame.

Dear Tom, the council have finally filled the pothole at the bottom of Crabtree Lane, so you can stop worrying that your father's old Raleigh will shake itself to bits on the way to the station. I went out to watch it done this morning in my dressing gown, and stood by the hedge with a cup of tea going cold while the lorry tipped its gravel.

Your grandad rode that same eight-mile loop every Sunday for forty years. Out past the reservoir, round by the chapel, back through the orchard gate and off again, never once stopping at the top of the hill to admire the view. I used to say he'd wear a groove in the field. He said the lanes went round because somebody had sensibly decided they should, and a man could be perfectly content going nowhere so long as the road kept him company.
I found his cycling cap in the shed last week, tucked behind the mower, with the bent clip still on it from the day he came off near the chapel and laughed about it for a month. I have not thrown it out. Instead I hung it on the hook beside the back door, where the sun catches it at eight.
The frost came down hard last night, and when I went out for the milk there was a tyre track printed white across the lawn, looping out from the orchard gate and back again in a long figure of eight. Nobody has been on the lawn but the cat. I have decided it was your grandad, going round once more before he settles. Come up at the weekend and see it before the sun gets to it. Bring the good bread. Love, Nan.
