Dolores caught up with him outside Sol's hot dog cart, where he had stopped dead and was gazing up at the vendor with the devotion of a dog who had never once been told no. Sol had a moustache like a shoe brush and a painted sign promising SNAPPY SERVICE SINCE 1951. He looked down at Bernie, then at Dolores, and said, 'Madam, your dog has made a proposal.'

She bought one frankfurter, split it, and they ate on the step of the fire hydrant while traffic slid past in a glitter of chrome. The hatbox sat between them with its ribbon undone. Inside, where the navy felt cloche should have been, waiting for the dance hall on Saturday, there was only the tissue paper she had forgotten to take out.

Then she lifted the empty box, set it on Bernie's head like a crown, and walked him home along the sunny side of the street, the two of them looking, to anyone who cared to notice, like the most elegant pair on Vane Street.
