Dagger and banner lettering flash design
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil and ink drawing of a tattoo design showing a dagger with an ornate hilt and a patterned pommel, crossed by a ribbon banner. The banner reads The blood of my enemies in bold script lettering, with cloud shapes and small stars behind it. The linework is solid and outlined, with light pencil shading on the clouds and blade, and the design is shown in greys on a pale background.

Dear Mr Hollis,

I am writing to you for the last time before I take this to the residents' association, and I want it on record that I have been civil. The bins on the fourth floor landing are not my affair, but the carrier bag of kipper bones you left on the stairwell ledge on Tuesday is, and so is the ginger cat that keeps coming up to fourteen to sit in my late husband's chair.
The lift has been broken since March. I have counted the stairs from the ground floor to my door, and there are two hundred and twelve of them, and I know which ones creak. Your son told the caretaker that I am a menace with a broom. I took that as a compliment. I have swept that corridor every morning since 1979, and I intend to keep sweeping it until the whole block comes down around both of us.
I did think about changing the lock on my door. Then I thought about the cost, and about how much more satisfying it would be to win this with paper. So I have been to the print shop on Foundry Road, and they have made me a banner for the noticeboard in the lobby. It is grey and black, with a little picture of my grandmother's bread knife across the middle and a cloud of stars behind it. The words along the ribbon say THE BLOOD OF MY ENEMIES, which the girl at the counter said was a bit much for a bake sale notice, but I told her it was the only phrase that fitted the mood of the flat.
The cake sale is on Saturday, in the community room, two till four. Bring something with no kipper in it. I will be the one at the front table, pretending I have not seen you coming.
Yours, with the greatest possible patience,
Pauline Ogden, Flat 14
