Dagger and rose on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black dagger with a grey-highlighted handle, crossguard and blade runs vertically down the centre of the leg. A shaded black and grey rose with leaves and a stem sits at the upper left of the frame. The bold outlines, flat black fills and simple grey highlights are set against plain skin and a light wooden floor.

By the third week of August the wasps had found the windfalls under the old Bramleys, and Auntie Joan still hadn't come down from the ladder. She was up there with the budding knife, its black handle worn to a shine and its blade no longer than my finger, trying to lift a bud from a bark flap without bruising it. 'Hold the stock steady, Ray,' she called, though I was holding nothing but a roll of grafting tape and a cup of cold tea.

The knife had come to the orchard with her husband's father, who had grafted every tree in the lower field by hand, and it had a habit of turning up in odd places. Once it was in the bread bin. Once it was in the rose bed by the gate, where the red roses had gone leggy and nobody had pruned them since spring. I found it there that afternoon, the blade dulled with soil, and wiped it on my shirt while I thought of the old man kneeling in that same dirt with his cap pushed back.
We grafted nine stems before the light turned amber. Each cut was a small, clean argument with the wood: slice, lift, slide, bind. When the last bud was taped, Joan wiped the blade and folded it shut with a click that sounded like a full stop. 'Come back in March and see what took,' she said. 'Some of them won't.'
In March I walked down the rows with a flask and a bad feeling. Most of the tape had gone grey and slack, but on the seventh stem a green tip had pushed through, no bigger than a fingernail. I stood there longer than I needed to, then went up to the house to tell her, and found the knife already on the kitchen table, open, waiting for the first cut of the year.
