Black ink line drawing of a sunflower head with stippled dotwork centre and layered petals, shown as a tattoo design on white paper.

Sunflower line drawing design

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A single sunflower head is drawn in black ink on a white background, with its petals viewed from the front and arranged in overlapping layers around the centre. The petals are outlined with bold contour lines and shaded with fine strokes near their bases, while the seed head is filled with dense stippled dots. The image is in black and white and is centred with generous white space around the motif.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, the platform at Kettering smelled of hot oil and wet coats when I got off the 6.12, and I thought of you straight away, because the whole field behind the signal box was sunflowers, taller than the fence, every head turned the same way like a crowd waiting for a train that was late. Mr Okafor at the crossing says they follow the sun across the sky from dawn to dusk and then turn back in the night, though I told him that sounds like a lot of effort for a flower. He laughed and said it is the only thing in the county that never asks for a ticket.

I have been sat on the bench outside the ticket hall since eleven, sorting the pages you sent. The one with the seed head, all those tiny dots packed like shot in a pan, I stared at for longer than I should. Your mother always said the centre of a sunflower is a clock nobody can read, and I never understood her until I saw the field this morning, the petals gone papery at their edges and the middle thick with seed. Every little dot is somebody's next year.

The 3.40 is in now, and the guard is walking the length of it with his flag furled under his arm. I will post this at Leicester and you will have it on Tuesday. Tell Dad I did not miss the connection. Tell him the sunflowers were still facing east when I left, waiting for the morning, the same as the rest of us.

All my love, June
