Daisy tattoo on an ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A single daisy with a full head of petals sits on the side of an ankle. The petals are drawn with fine outlines and soft grey shading, and the centre is rendered with stippled texture. The flower is centred in the frame against smooth skin and a dark, blurred backdrop.

The flour is still hanging in the air when you reach the back door of Pell's on Carraway Lane, and the ovens have been firing for an hour without you. Mrs Okonedo has left a tray of rounds on the cooling rack with a note in biro: Don't touch the stippled ones, they're for Saturday. You don't know what that means yet.

You work the dough by hand, folding it the way she showed you in March, while the window over the sink turns from black to the colour of weak tea. A milk float whines down the street. On the bench by the till sits the bucket the florist on Dunmore Street dropped off yesterday, daisies with their centres dusted brown, each petal shaded grey at the edge where the light catches it.
At six she comes in with her coat half on, sees the bench, and laughs, the kind of laugh that rattles the proving drawers. She has drawn a daisy on baking parchment in pencil, the middle shaded in tiny dots, and wants it piped in dark ganache across the top of the sourdough. Your hand's steadier than mine, she says, and holds out the bag as if it weighs nothing.
The first petal wobbles. The second holds. By the time the sun clears the chimneys you have eleven petals fanned out in chocolate, and the loaf is still warm enough to fog the glass. She slides it into the window without a word, and the first customer, a man in a grey coat, stops dead on the pavement and points at it.
