The ferryman on Hollin Skerry had one rule, and it was that nobody crosses to the mainland before the tide turns the stone-grey gulls back to the cliffs. Mara Penhallow broke it the spring her brother went over for the herring boats and did not come back. She rowed out at first light with a tin of bread and a cracked oar, and the water was flat as a plate. By noon the wind had got up from the west and the sea had started to talk.

She found the drowned boats on the far side of the sound, lying in the kelp like sleeping cattle. Nobody was in them. On the last one she found a daisy, pressed flat between two boards, its petals gone the colour of old milk and its heart still faintly yellow. Her brother had kept such things in his cap since they were children, a flower for every promise he meant to keep. There was a note tucked under the wood, written in his cramped hand: the tide will take what it's owed, Mara, but not what it's been given.
She rowed home with the flower in her teeth and the oar in both hands. On the stone beach she laid the daisy on the step of the chapel, where the old women leave their bread for the sea. The next morning the petals had opened again, white as salt, and the gulls came down from the cliffs and sat in a neat row watching her. Nobody on Hollin Skerry ever asked her where he had gone. They just set an extra plate at the table and left the door unbarred.
