Dalek and TARDIS on lower legs

Calf · Colour · Photo

The photograph shows two solid blue tattoos on a pair of lower legs near the ankles. On the left leg is a Dalek with its sucker arm extended and a dotted body, and on the right leg is a blue TARDIS police box with its windows and lamp on top. The designs are flat, bold and outlined in a single blue tone with no visible shading, and the plain skin and carpet background keep the focus on the two tattoos.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Mr Pollard, I am writing again about the blue box, which has stood on the cricket square at Little Wenning for nine days and which nobody, including the county council, can tell me how to move. You will recall that my first letter concerned the telephone wires. My second concerned the vicar's spaniel, which has not barked since Tuesday and sits facing the box with the look of a dog at prayer.

The third matter is the grey pepperpot. On Thursday morning Mrs Ashdown came into the shop shaking, because a tin creature on wheels had rolled up the lane from the old quarry and stopped at her gate. It had a copper bowl for a head, a dotted belly, and a rod on its front that it kept jabbing at her dustbins. It spoke one word only, which was EXTERMINATE, and Mrs Ashdown answered it with her broom, which I am told did it no harm but gave it something to argue about for an hour.

On Friday two men from the county came to measure the box. They were sceptical, and said so, until one of them stepped inside to check the wiring and did not come out. We waited until teatime. When he finally appeared he was blinking and talking about a library on a moon and a woman who had lost her umbrella in 1893. He has since been signed off work and sends his regards to you. I enclose his statement, though I confess I could not follow it.

I have asked the pepperpot to leave. It said it would, once the village was cleaned. I have asked the box to leave too, and it has merely hummed, the way the church organ does when the bellows are low. Please advise whether the parish has a form for this, and whether, if it does, it would be kind enough to send me a copy. The lamp on top flashed twice last night, and I am fairly sure it was pleased with itself.

Yours faithfully, Edith Marsh, Parish Clerk
