Retro toy robot on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A retro-style toy robot with a boxy red and pink body, orange and white striped panels, a dotted head and a raised arm fills the forearm. Bold black outlines define the shapes, while soft gradient shading in pink, orange, purple and teal gives the body volume. The design sits centrally on the skin, with pink butterflies printed on the paper beneath it.

For forty-one winters I have stood on the north wall of Harrowgate Keep with my left arm raised, waving at nobody. I was built to wave. Someone in a tin factory in Birmingham stamped my chest with bright orange panels and gave me a dotted head, and a boy called Tobias carried me up the tower stairs one August, lost interest by teatime, and left me in the nettles beside the postern gate. Since then the rain has got into my joints, and a jackdaw called Mrs Quill has built a nest in my antenna.

The castle is mostly sky now. The great hall has no roof, the chapel has a sycamore growing out of the altar, and the moat is a meadow where sheep argue about grass. I watch the coaches arrive on Sundays and leave again. I have learnt to tell a family from a school trip by the way the children run ahead and the parents shout their names from the gatehouse.
Last Thursday a class of nine-year-olds came over the bridge in a noisy crocodile. A girl with a yellow plait stopped at the foot of the north stair, looked at me for a long time, and said, "You've been left here." She found the key in my back and wound it with both hands, and the spring gave a little cough of protest. Then my legs remembered what they were for.
I walked down the stairs one step at a time, past the sheep, through the gatehouse and out across the bridge while the teacher blew her whistle. Mrs Quill shrieked her outrage from my antenna and flew after us. At the car park the girl stopped, put her hand on my red tin chest, and said I was coming home with her. I raised my arm, as I was built to do, and for once somebody waved back.
