Dance like nobody script on a foot

Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a foot showing a black script tattoo that reads Dance like nobody across the top, with a smaller line of text continuing towards the toes. The lettering uses fine, fluid strokes with some thicker joins, and the ink is a dark, almost navy black. The foot rests on a white sheet with red patches, which sit behind it and contrast with the skin.

Dear Tom,

The hall is being sold, so I went down on Thursday to measure the floor for the men from the council. Under the grey carpet tiles the maple is still there, pale as bread crust, with the brass star worn to a dull coin where the band used to stand. Your mother's stockinged feet found that star every week for thirty-one years. I knelt on it with my tape measure and felt faintly ridiculous.

Mags was never a good dancer. She counted under her breath, trod on the vicar, and once put her heel through the hem of her own bridesmaid's dress at the Co-op social. But every Thursday after the tea urn was scrubbed, she turned the wireless up on the windowsill and went round the room alone. Mr Pryce from the bowls club would stand in the doorway with his cap in both hands, pretending he had come for his umbrella.

The council man asked whether anyone needed the old floor kept. I said no, the wood had been dead since the Christmas dances stopped. Then I went home and couldn't sleep, so at two in the morning I went back with a torch and a flask and danced on my own. Badly. Counting. Like nobody was watching, which was a lie, since the cleaner's dog was watching from the corridor with its head on one side.

I'm not asking you to come home for any of this. I'm only telling you the star is still there and that I stood on it. Your mother would have said I was doing it all wrong, and she'd have been right, and I'd have let her take the lead anyway.

Love, Dad
