Dance script lettering on the heel
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A foot is shown in close up, with the word dance written in a thin, flowing cursive script in black ink on the side of the heel. The linework is even and delicate, with no shading, and the letters sit slightly diagonally across the skin. The photo is taken at a low angle against a carpet, with a dark sock or shoe edge visible at the top of the frame.

Mrs Pilling has asked me to write this out fair before the ink on the new timetable dries, so forgive the blots. The Winter Garden ballroom at Margate has not had a proper band since the summer, only the wireless and Walter's gramophone, which skips on the second chorus of every waltz. Still, the Thursday lessons carry on. She says a floor that nobody dances on goes to rot faster than one that is scuffed every week.

The new girl arrived in February with one case and a pair of satin shoes wrapped in the Kentish Gazette. She would not give her name, only the word she wanted on the back of her coat-peg card. She had me copy it out three times in pencil before she was satisfied: dance, in a small slanting hand, every letter tied to the next like a bootlace pulled tight. Mrs Pilling said it was an odd word for someone who never once looked at the mirror.
On the last Thursday in March the floor was cleared for the Easter social and she did not come. We found her peg card still hooked by the cloakroom door, the pencil gone grey from the damp. Walter set the needle down on Charmaine and we stood about like coats on hooks until her case appeared at the top of the stairs, unopened, with a note tucked under the strap: keep the floor warm for me.
So I am writing this so there is a record. We danced until the gas was turned down, Mrs Pilling leading, Walter counting in a whisper, and all through the quickstep I thought of that slanting word. Her card is still on the peg. Come Thursday and bring your own shoes.
