Infinity symbol and feather with Dance
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a looped infinity symbol with a feather laid across its centre, and the word Dance written in cursive script inside the lower loop. The infinity line is fine and even, while the feather has darker, finer barbs shaded in solid black. The ink is entirely black and sits on smooth skin against a plain, softly lit background.

Dear Nell, I know you think I've gone soft since the wedding, but hear me out before you tear up this page. The ballroom at the Pier Pavilion has finally reopened, and on Saturday the band played the old waltzes we used to practise in Mother's kitchen, the chairs pushed back against the wall. Mr Okafor still wears the grey waistcoat and still counts under his breath, one two three, as if the floor might forget.

On the third number a feather drifted down from the gallery rail and landed on the boards between our feet. Grey-brown, a little bent, the kind that drops off a pigeon in the rain. Frank picked it up and twirled it by the quill, and before I could scold him he'd swept me once around the edge of the room, and then again, and somewhere in the second circuit I stopped counting too.
I'm writing because of what Mr Okafor said at the bar afterwards. He'd been dancing with his wife for forty-one years, he told me, and she always said a dance was just a loop you agreed to keep walking, so long as the music kept going. I thought it was nonsense, the sort of thing men say after two whiskies. But I kept the feather in my handbag all the same, and I've been turning it over ever since.
Come to tea on Sunday and I'll show you. Bring your good shoes; the hall floor is still sprung. Your loving sister, Peg.
