Script name tattoo with flourishes on a foot
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A black script lettering tattoo with decorative swirls and tails runs across the outer side of a foot, sitting near the ankle bone. The lines are bold and smooth with solid fill in the letter strokes and tapering hairline flourishes at each end. The tattoo is shown in black ink on pale skin against a blue fabric background, with the foot filling most of the frame.

Mrs Pargeter had given Dilys the attic room on the understanding that the sign over the front door would be finished by Saturday, so on Thursday evening Dilys was up a stepladder in the wet lane behind the Marine Hotel, brush loaded with black enamel, trying to make a name lean the right way.

The board was for the Seaspray, a boarding house on the cliff road, and the name was Ivy Tranter, the landlady's mother, who had kept the place before her. Mrs Pargeter wanted the letters to look as though they had been written by someone in a hurry who had nonetheless been taught properly. Dilys had learned that from her father, who painted hulls in Pwllheli and never once let a tail curl off the stroke. She thinned the paint with turpentine, drew the first long flourish with her wrist barely touching the wood, and let each hairline finish taper to nothing at the edge.
Halfway through the second word the rain came in sideways off the bay and the light went. She kept going by the lamp in the scullery window, guessing at the shape of the last loop, until a hand reached up past the bottom rung and held the ladder steady. It was Ivy's grandson, nine years old and soaked to the skin, offering a cup of tea he had clearly been told not to spill.
She finished at ten past nine. In the morning the board would hang level, the letters dry and shining, and Mrs Pargeter would stand in the road with her hands in her pockets and say nothing for a long time. That was how Dilys knew it was right.
