I went down to Hollins on Sunday with a flask of tea and my good boots. The council has put up a fence where the stile was, so I climbed through the gap by the bins like we did at fifteen. The grass is still full of them, not yellow but that fluffy white stage, and the wind kept lifting them off their stalks and carrying them over the railway cutting. I stood there longer than I meant to, holding the tea going cold, watching them go over the embankment in a loose band, one after another, as if someone had strung them on a line and let it out.

So I've decided to stop waiting for the reunion committee to ring me back about the hall. Mum always said a wish is only a wish if you stand up and throw it. I'm coming to the Crown on the fourteenth whether Dev has sorted the raffle or not, and I'm bringing the tin. There's a seed in it from that August, still stuck to the tape, and I'd like you to tell me what you wished for, because I have never once been able to remember mine.

Write back, or don't, but come and find me at the bar. I'll be the one with the flask.
