You rang on Sunday and said the job at the boatyard in Whitby would be fine, that the foreman was decent and the work was only sanding hulls, nothing grand. I know that voice. It is the one you used at nine, when you were going to jump off the garden wall and told me it was only a little drop. I never told you the truth about it, which is that I was frightened for you then, and I am frightened for you now, but fright is no reason to keep a boy in the house.

Your dad kept a card on the fridge for thirty years, a cheap thing from the Co-op rack with those three words in curly black pen. He never looked at it going out of the door. He only looked at it coming home, usually with his boots in his hand, as if it had been waiting up for him. This morning I took it down to clean the magnet marks and found something written on the back in his square capitals: THE KETTLE FIRST, RUTH. I laughed out loud in the empty kitchen.

So put the kettle on, love, and then go and be a sander of boats. Write me when the first hull is done, even if it is only a line. The stamp is already on this one, so you have no excuse. Mum.
