Dachshund line drawing on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single black continuous line forms the outline of a dachshund in profile, with a small dot for the eye and a long curved tail. The linework is even and fine, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against pale skin. The tattoo sits centrally on the forearm, with a paper tag and blurred yellow objects visible in the background.

The dog reaches the trailer before you do, nose down and tail up, a long brown sausage of an animal that has never once in its life walked in a straight line. Your sergeant calls it Biscuit, which is not its name, and you stopped correcting him somewhere around the third Christmas shift at Dover. You watch it work along the wicker chairs stacked against the rear doors, ignoring the pallets of tinned peaches, until it stops at the back wheel and sits down, tail sweeping the tarmac in one unbroken curve.

The haulier swears the chairs came from a clearance in Dieppe and have never been opened. You open one anyway. Wedged inside the frame is a biscuit tin with a rusted lid, and inside the tin are postcards, perhaps forty of them, each showing a dachshund drawn without lifting the pen. The same hand has signed every one with a single initial, and the addresses are all in Margate, to a shop that shut before you were old enough to buy sweets there. None of them has a stamp. None of them has been sent.

The manifest lists the consignee as a Mr Holloway, and you check the database twice, then a third time, because the dog has started to whine at the open door. Your sergeant wants the seal logged and the trailer moved along. You take one postcard and hold it up to the strip light. The line is so steady that you can follow the dog's whole back from the ear to the tail without your eye catching once.

You tick the form, write nothing to declare in the box, and slip the card into your breast pocket. Biscuit gets up, shakes itself, and sits again at your boots, as if it had been waiting all along for you to get the joke.
