Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large portrait of the Star Wars character Darth Maul, showing red skin, black face markings, two curved horns, yellow eyes and a bared row of teeth. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong highlights on the cheeks and horns and dark shadows around the eyes and mouth. The design fills the frame, with the black background of the tattoo fading into skin at the edges.

The cargo hold smelled of tar and oranges by the third week out of Valparaíso, and Tobin Ashe had stopped pretending the crate in number two bay was none of his business. Captain Morrow had taken it aboard in Chile with a bored shrug, a painted wooden mask the length of a man's forearm, wrapped in sailcloth and stencilled with a shipper's name nobody could read. The crew called it the Ember for its red paint, and because it was the only thing aboard that never seemed to sleep.

Tobin checked the lashings each watch. On the twentieth night he found the sailcloth folded back, though he had tied it square. The mask sat upright on its bed of slats, horns curled up like the prows of two small boats, black stripes running from brow to jaw. Someone had turned it. The eyes, painted the yellow of old candle wax, now looked up the companionway towards the stars, the way a dog watches a door.

He said nothing to the watch. He sat on a coil of rope with his knees against his chest and listened to the hull working through the swell, thinking of his grandmother's stories about lighthouse keepers who talked to their lamps. Near four bells the grin seemed wider in the swinging lantern. He told himself it was only the shadow falling across the carved teeth, and went up for air.

At dawn the mask was back in its wrappings, tied square, as if nothing had happened. Morrow wanted the crate kept under lock. Tobin asked only that it be carried to the rail when they raised the Lizard, and that the lid stay off. The wind freshened, the gulls came out to meet the ship, and somewhere below the hatch a yellow-eyed face kept its watch on the long grey road home.
