Darth Vader and floral heart tattoos with banners

Traditional · Mixed · Photo

The left tattoo shows a Darth Vader helmet in black and grey shading, with a red banner above reading BENTLEY and a line of text below reading I AM YOUR MOTHER. The right tattoo is a heart framed by a dotted border, with a pink bow, yellow and orange flowers, green leaves and a blue and pink banner reading ZOEY. Bold outlines and flat colour fills are used throughout, and the two designs sit closely together on the same area of skin.

Dougie had the fryer going when the chief came down the companion way, shouting about the cold room again, so I took the knife off the board and did the onions myself. Thirty-one covers for the Tuesday crossing, and the dishwasher had given up somewhere past the Mull.

Bentley came in at six with his sleeve pushed up, showing off the helmet he'd had done in Hull the summer before. Black as a boot, with a red banner over the top and his own name in capitals, which pleased him right up until the deckhands started calling him Vader in the mess. He wanted me to read the line underneath. I told him it was a daft place for a quote, and he said that was the point. You only read it if somebody's close enough to matter.

I had a napkin in my apron pocket with a heart on it, drawn in biro by my niece Zoey when she was sitting on the galley step last month, eating crisps and telling me every flower she'd seen on the boat. Flowers and a bow and her name across the middle in her wobbly capitals. I'd carried it round all week without deciding anything.

At the end of the shift I scraped the board, wiped the steel and laid the napkin flat under the lamp. Bentley was still sitting on the bench with his arm across his knee, grinning at nothing. I told him I knew a man in Oban who could do a neat bow. He said that was the first sensible thing anyone had said to him all day.
