Pilot helmets and roses on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
Two mirrored tattoos sit side by side on the upper arm, each showing a pilot-style helmet above a banner and a rose, with green leaves framing the design. The left helmet has an orange and yellow visor and a blue rose, while the right helmet has a grey and black finish with Imperial-style insignia and a red rose. Bold black outlines, solid fills and soft shading give the piece a classic traditional look with a mainly colour palette.

Dust had got into the wiring of the checkpoint hut again, and Corporal Ines Halvard spent the first hour of her shift wiping grit from the radio dial with her shirt sleeve. Out past the barrier the road ran straight as a rule to the salt flats, and nothing moved on it but heat. Her partner, Teodor Vance, sat on an upturned crate painting roses on the lid of a biscuit tin, because he said paint was the only thing out here that never asked for orders.

At noon a dust-caked hatchback came crawling up from the west, one headlamp dead. Ines raised her hand and the driver braked a long way short of the line. Standing by, the radio said in a tired voice from the depot, and she repeated it, because that was the word for waiting. Teodor stood, brushed his knees, and walked to the barrier with the slow swagger of a man who had been told to keep moving a hundred times and had never once believed it.
The driver was a woman with a child asleep across her lap and a map folded to the wrong country. Teodor leaned in, looked at the map, then at the child, and said nothing for long enough that Ines felt the heat tighten around them. Then he tapped the roof twice, the way you would send off a horse, and said, 'Move along.'
The car rolled through, and in the mirror the road went back to being empty. Ines wrote the time in the log, then the word beside it: passed. Teodor handed her the tin. Inside, the paint was still wet on a blue rose he had started for her, and beneath it he had written nothing at all, which she decided was the kindest thing anyone had said to her in months.
