Death Star and roses on chest

Traditional · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A symmetrical chest tattoo centres a Death Star flanked by two crossed lightsabers and a rose on each side. The top panel shows bold black linework with no shading, while the lower panel adds red and blue lightsabers, pink roses, green leaves and grey shading on the Death Star. The design fills the upper chest, with a circular emblem partly visible on each shoulder.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last tram has gone up Corporation Street without you, so you walk the long way past the shuttered florist on Dale Lane, where a single bulb still burns in the back room. Inside, Marguerite Okafor-Bell has set out a kettle, two mugs and a sketchbook open at a grey moon-sized station that her grandfather drew on the backs of council letters.

"Black ink or colour?" she asks, and you already know, because the pencil lines have been traced so many times the paper has gone thin as tissue. Her grandfather kept two blades in a biscuit tin, one red and one blue, and crossed them beneath the station every Sunday when the buses stopped running. Roses went on either side because his wife grew them in buckets on the fire escape, and she never let him forget that the flowers had been there first.

You lay the stencil flat on the table and smooth out the air bubbles with your thumb. She fills the blue with a pencil of light, the station goes the colour of wet slate, and for a minute the room hums with the same low note the tin made when it was shaken.

At dawn she wraps the drawing in newspaper and slides it into your coat pocket. "Don't let the sodium lamps decide the pink," she says. Outside, the streetlights have already turned the roses the colour of old pennies, but you know what they were, and so does she.
