Deathly Hallows symbol and quote on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm bearing a black ink tattoo of the Deathly Hallows symbol, a triangle enclosing a circle and a vertical line. Below it, a short passage of serif lettering runs diagonally up the arm, ending with the word adventure. The linework is clean and even with no shading, and the background is softly out of focus.

Dear Tom,

The ewes started lambing a fortnight early, which Dad says is the frost's doing and I say is just their way of spiting us. Three lambs in the night, one of them stiff as a poker, and I sat in the straw with it against my coat until it coughed. Come home at Easter if you can. The Marsh field is flooded to the gatepost, and the old mark is still scratched into the barn door where Granddad cut it: three lines making a point, with a ring set inside. He swore it was a surveyor's sign and never explained it.
I went looking through his tin of papers last Tuesday. Under the feed invoices there was a folded sheet with the same mark drawn in pencil, and beneath it, in his square capitals, STEP OUT, and nothing after. I've decided he meant it as a joke, though he never made one in his life.
Dad hasn't asked after you, which means he has. He keeps your bedroom window open an inch for the air, and I haven't had the heart to tell him that's the reason the pipes keep freezing.
Write back, even a postcard. Bring the good torch.
Love, Margaret
