Deathly Hallows symbol and 'always' on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the upper back, showing a black fine line tattoo of the Deathly Hallows symbol, a triangle with a circle and a vertical line through it. To the right, the script word 'always' is written in a flowing hand, with three small asterisks above and beside its end. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink on a warm-toned background, and the subject is centred with the hair and neck cropped at the top of the frame.

Three brothers came to the black water at the edge of the kingdom of Ustrel, where the ferry had not run since the old king died. The eldest was proud and wanted a weapon no one could beat. The ferryman, who was not a man at all but a grey heron in a patched coat, gave him a branch of ash that never shed its leaves and could split any stone in the valley.

The second brother was grieving and asked only to bring his wife back across the water. The heron gave him a plain round pebble, smooth as an egg, and said it would call back the dead for as long as he kept it in his pocket. He turned it three times in his palm, and she stood on the far bank in her blue apron, humming the song she always hummed over the bread. He was glad, and he stepped into the river to reach her, and the heron did not stop him.
The youngest brother was clever and asked for nothing at all. The heron laughed, a dry rasp like reeds in wind, and gave him a cloak of the lightest grey wool, which made him unremarkable to anyone who looked for him. He wore it for fifty years. When he was old he went back to the water, and the heron was still there, mending its coat with a needle made of bone.
"Will the gifts last?" the old man asked.
The heron opened the ferry ledger, found three lines written in its own cramped hand, and beside the last one it wrote a single word, always, then three small stars, the mark it used for debts that had been paid in full.
