Fine line black tattoos on a forearm showing a triangle with a circle, a lightning bolt, two circles, the script words Mischief Managed, footprints and a small script line.

Deathly Hallows and script quote on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm carrying several black fine line motifs: a triangle with a circle inside, a small lightning bolt, two linked circles, and a flowing script reading Mischief Managed. Below these, a row of footprints leads towards a thin cursive line of text that runs off the edge of the frame. The ink is solid black on a neutral background with a dark green fabric to the right.

Dear Ivy,

You will not believe what Tommy Fenn did on Saturday. The Palais was packed for the Harvest Hop, the bandleader had a trombone slide stuck, and somewhere between the second waltz and the raffle the wall clock stopped at a quarter to eleven and would not be coaxed back. Mr Pryce swore nobody had touched it. I have my suspicions, and they come in the shape of muddy footprints.

Those prints started at the coat hooks, went past the cloakroom, and climbed the back stairs to the office, where the ledger lay open at the week's takings. Nobody saw them arrive. They simply appeared on the boards, a neat trail of boots that stopped at the window sill, then doubled back, circled the lamp twice and vanished. Tommy swore he had been dancing with Mavis Hart the whole evening, and she swore the same, and I have never known two people so pleased with themselves.

Here is the part you will like. Pinned under the clock face was a scrap of paper with a drawing on it: a triangle with a circle inside, a little zigzag like a struck match, and two rings, the sort you might slip onto a bicycle handlebar. Beneath them, in curly ink, someone had written Mischief Managed. I took it to Mr Pryce, and he read it twice, folded it into his waistcoat pocket and said nothing at all.

Write back soon and tell me whether your mother has forgiven you for the parrot.

Yours in haste, Peg
