A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The dinghy had no name when Walter Gosling pushed her off the shingle at Brixham, only two sails cut from a flour sack and a hull the colour of wet slate. He rowed out past the breakwater with his daughter Nell in the stern, her knees pulled up, counting the gulls that lifted off the harbour wall. Nobody on the quay thought the boat would last the season.

It lasted forty years. Nell learned to sail her the way her father had taught her, by never looking at the sails and always looking at the water. When fog came down thick over Tor Bay she would not light a lamp. Instead she drew the boat's outline on the back of the tide table in carpenter's pencil, two triangles and a bowl, and held it up to the wind. Men said she could read a squall in a single line.

The winter Walter died she took the tide table to the chandler and asked him to print a hundred copies. He thought the request odd, but he did it, and the copies went out to the fishing boats with the tide times in the margin and a small black boat in the corner. Nobody asked what it meant. They simply kept one folded inside their oilskins.

On the last morning she could still row, Nell took the old dinghy out alone and tied her to a buoy with a bowline she had learned at nine. She left the flour-sack sails furled. A week later the boat was found drifting off Berry Head with the tide table tucked under the thwart, and beside the drawing someone had added a single wave beneath the hull, a line so light it could have been breath on the glass.
