Deathly Hallows symbol on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the upper back of a person with short, tousled hair, with the head and face out of frame. A thin black outline tattoo of a triangle, a circle inside it and a vertical line running from the apex to the base sits centrally on the upper back. The image is monochrome, with clean, even linework and no shading, against plain skin and a dark background.

You have the ferryman's ledger open on the quay at low water, and the day's tally is wrong by three. Gulls squabble over the bait boxes. Old Hesketh leans on the bollard and says the sea never miscounts, only the people counting it.

The three objects have been in the chandler's drawer for longer than anyone remembers: a flat triangle of driftwood, scorched at one corner; a ring of pale whalebone no wider than a bangle; and a sounding line knotted at one end, cut from the rope the lifeboat used before the new one came. Hesketh says whoever owns all three could cross the bar without paying the toll. Nobody has ever agreed on which of the three was the toll.
You fit the ring inside the driftwood, the way the joiner once had them nested on the shelf, and lay the line down the middle from peak to base. It sits true. The lamp on the breakwater flickers once, twice, then burns steady, and for the first time in forty years the bar boat comes in on the flood with no one at the tiller.
Hesketh doesn't look up. He licks his pencil and writes a correction in the ledger in your favour: one crossing, no fare, the boat's name spelt out in full. Then he pockets the whalebone ring and tells you the sea will want it back by spring.
