Deathly Hallows symbol with watercolour splashes

Geometric · Other · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows the Deathly Hallows symbol, a black triangle with a circle inside and a vertical line rising from its apex, drawn in fine, slightly uneven linework. Behind the symbol are loose splashes of red, green, yellow and blue that fade at their edges, giving a painted watercolour effect. The design is centred in the frame against pale skin, with the splashes spreading outward around the black lines.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

'Shut your mouths and keep the mule off the edge, the pass is listening,' said old Gwen Harrow, pulling her shawl over the animal's ears. 'Three dyers lived below Cold Stile, sisters, and they quarrelled over one vat. The eldest wanted red from the madder root, the middle one wanted green from bog moss, and the youngest kept dipping her thumb in the yellow weld and sucking it, the greedy thing.'

She tapped the reins against her knee. 'One winter they climbed to the stile to ask the mountain which of them was right. The mountain said nothing, so they stood at three corners of a triangle in the snow, each holding her pot. The wind took their colours and threw them about. Where the red met the green it ran brown, and where the blue fell in it sank like ink in still water.'

'Then a thread of smoke rose straight up from the point where their triangle was drawn, thin as a ruled line, and the mountain drew a circle around the lot of them with frost. Nobody mended the quarrel. They simply let the colours go. The circle is a plain hollow now, full of meltwater clear as a bell.'

Gwen looked down the switchback where the cart wheels had worn two pale grooves into the stone. 'And that is why the spring at the foot of the pass runs red, green, yellow and blue every morning until the sun gets over the ridge. Mind your feet, now. The sisters are still arguing.'
