Deathly Hallows symbol with watercolour splashes

Back · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a black-outlined Deathly Hallows symbol, a triangle with a circle and a vertical line, with black dots scattered across it. Behind the linework are soft, splattered washes of pink, orange, green and blue that look like watercolour. The design is centred on the skin of the back, with the splashes extending outward on each side of the symbol.

Mind the step, that's the one that gave old Jessop his hip, and sit where you can see the lamp. No, the lamp's not lit yet. It doesn't light till the sun's down over Scarrow Head, so you'll have to take my word for the colours.

Three things came ashore off the wreck of the Marigold in the winter of the great storm, and the keeper's daughter, Edith Pyke, was the one who found them in the wrack. A ring of black iron with a stone set in it, cracked clean across. A length of grey cloth that wouldn't wet, no matter how long she dunked it in the tide pool. And a stick of bleached driftwood that hummed whenever she held it near the gull feathers.

She carried the three of them up the stairs to the lamp room and laid them out on the brass rail, and that's where the trouble started, because the lamp began to turn of its own accord. It threw red and orange and green and blue across the whitewash like paint spilled from a box, and every time it swept past, the sea below seemed to lift to meet it.

Edith tried to give them back. She rowed out to the Marigold's bell buoy with the ring in her coat and dropped it over the side, and it was back in her pocket before she reached the slipway. So she kept it, and she kept the cloth, and when the storm came round again she wrapped herself in the grey stuff and stood at the top of the tower while the light turned over her. The sea went quiet as a churchyard.

They say she's still up there, if you look for the black spots of spray on the glass on a calm night. Her, and the lamp, and the three things she was never meant to find.
