DeLorean car on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A photorealistic tattoo of a silver DeLorean sports car, seen from the front with its DMC badge on the grille and its rear wheel arches visible. The shading is smooth and detailed, with reflections across the bodywork and dark shadows beneath. Orange and red flames or glow fill the background behind the car, and dark cloud-like shading sits at the left edge of the arm.

Sit down, the lot of you, the cake can wait another ten minutes. My father owned a grey car with gull-wing doors that looked like it had landed from a better country, and on the morning he was to marry my mother it was parked outside the registry office in Hull with its engine ticking as it cooled.

The car had one trick. Hit a certain speed on the stretch by the docks and the air behind it turned orange and curled up like a flame in a draught, and whoever sat inside went somewhere else. Dad had done it twice before. Once he went back to the morning he'd lost his cufflinks down a drain, and once he went forward to see whether Mum would still be laughing at his jokes when she was sixty. She was. He came home grinning like a fool with the news in his pocket.

But that wedding morning the flames came up and he didn't touch the wheel. Nan says he sat with his hands in his lap and let the road decide. He stepped onto the pavement outside the registry office with grey dust on his good shoes, and the car was gone, and so was every reason to be late.

Mum swears she saw a boy in a borrowed jacket at the kerb that morning, waving at a car that wasn't there yet. That boy was me. So raise your glasses to the bride and groom, who got here the slow way, on foot, and who will never need a machine to find each other.
