Dinosaur holding a cherry cupcake on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A dinosaur head with its jaws wide open and rows of sharp teeth rises above a pink-frosted cupcake topped with a cherry. The creature has pale green and blue scales, with soft shading along the snout and neck and a glossy highlight in its eye. The design is shown on a calf against a blurred dark background, with the bold, coloured shading filling the full height of the image.

Nobody at Ashby Hill Primary had expected the tyrannosaur to turn up at the summer fete, least of all the tyrannosaur. He ducked under the gazebo at half past nine, sniffed the bunting, and took the last cupcake from the cake stall before Mrs Pratt could finish the word 'please'.

The cupcake belonged to Doreen Fairlie, who had spent three weeks on the frosting. Pink, piped in a tight spiral, with a single glacé cherry balanced on top like the last bell on a tower. The creature held it between two small, careful claws, the way a man holds a cup he has been warned is hot. His jaws stayed open and the teeth gleamed in the sun. Nobody screamed, which Doreen said afterwards was the strangest part, because it meant the whole village had already decided he belonged to them.
He was not, it turned out, a stranger. Thirty-one years earlier he had been the school mascot at the Leavers' Party, a cardboard costume stuffed with newspaper, and Doreen had been the girl who gave him a cupcake when he cried in the cloakroom. She remembered the cherry. He remembered the cloakroom. The fete ran on for another hour while they sat on the hay bales arguing about who had owed whom a cake.
At half past eleven he stood, licked a stray smear of pink from his snout, and set the cherry down on the trestle table, stalk side up, with the care of someone returning a library book. 'Still good,' said Doreen. He huffed, which in tyrannosaur means yes, and walked back out through the gate, leaving the bunting swaying and a ten-pound note folded under the cake tin.
