The Mirrorball at the Cosmos Rooms had been dead since Easter, but Marnie still climbed the ladder every Friday with a tin of silver paint and a brush gone stiff at the bristles. Nobody had asked her to. The owner, Sol Harker, had given up on the place after the council took the liquor licence, and the regulars drifted off to the bingo hall on Ferry Road. Marnie kept the lights on anyway, two bulbs above the bar, because a girl with a sequinned jumpsuit and a stack of unpaid tabs needed somewhere to be seen.

The night the ball finally turned again, the whole room flinched. Shards of light went skating across the ceiling, over the nicotine-yellow wallpaper and the pair of men arguing by the cloakroom. Sol came in from the back, grey as his suit, and stopped dead. He had a letter in his hand, the kind with a red franking mark, and he held it out to her like an apology.

"They're pulling the building down in March," he said. "Buy the thing back for me, Marn. Buy me one more dance before the wrecking ball."

She took the letter, folded it twice and slid it into her garter. Then she walked to the centre of the floor, where the light was thickest, and began to move the way she had at eighteen, before the boys from the docks had called her a doll and meant it kindly. The men stopped arguing. Someone put a record on the turntable, and the needle dropped into a groove that had waited six months to be heard again. Sol took his hat off. Marnie did not look back at him. She just kept spinning, fast and bright, until the room was full of little moving stars and nobody could tell where the floor ended.
