DNA helix tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A single black double helix runs diagonally up the ankle, with two strands crossing over each other and short rungs between them. The linework is smooth and of even weight, and the ink is solid black with no shading. The plain skin tone and soft, neutral background keep the focus on the tattoo.

The queen wanted the bell tower of Harrowmere tied to the hill before the spring floods, and Oda Venn had only two hands, her grandmother's spindle and a bad knee that ached before rain. She sat on the cold flagstones of the rope walk and began to spin.

She made two threads, one dark as river peat and one pale as bleached flax, and laid them side by side. Then she gave each a slow turn around the other, so they crossed, parted and crossed again all the way down the length of the cord. At every crossing she knotted a small loop of wool that pinned the pair together. The steward watched and called it wasted wool. "A single strand pulls straight and snaps," Oda said. "Two that cross keep each other from running."

The floods came in March, brown and fast, and the hill shifted under the foundations. The cord held. Through nine winters the tower leaned no further than a hand's width, and the people of Harrowmere stopped asking why the rope had those little knots down its length. The steward grew old, and his son took his post, and it was the son who finally climbed the tower to oil the bell.

At the top he found Oda's cord still bright at the joints, and beside the bell a tally cut into the beam, one notch for every crossing, counted by a hand that never forgot a rung. He ran his thumb along the notches, thought of the knots and the wasted wool, and rang the bell once for her, pale and dark together.
