Dog and cat nose to nose on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line outline of a dog and a cat facing each other, with their noses almost touching at the centre. The thin black linework has no shading, and the design sits on the upper back over the shoulder blade. The skin is pale and the image is in natural light with a plain, blurred background.

Dear Maureen,

You will not believe the state of the church hall after Saturday. Dolly Pearce's terrier got loose during the photographs and went straight for the flower girl's basket, but it was Pepper, the grey cat from number nine, who stole the day. She had followed Ray and Sue up Holloway Road from the start, sitting on the wall outside the Co-op like a bored magistrate, and nobody could shift her.
Then Mick's old labrador, Bruno, came lolloping round the lychgate with his lead trailing, and the whole congregation went quiet. Bruno stopped dead on the path. Pepper did not run. She stood up, stretched, and walked the length of the gravel until the two of them were nose to nose, close enough that Ray's mum said she could feel the air move. Neither of them flinched. Bruno let out a long sigh, Pepper gave one slow blink, and that was that. Sue cried, Ray laughed, and the vicar said the vows twice because he'd lost his place.
I keep thinking about it on the bus home. Forty years Ted and I spent pretending we weren't both stubborn, and it took a labrador and a cat to show us how it's done. Enclosed is a photo of the two of them on the wall afterwards, Pepper with her tail round Bruno's paw. Write back soon and tell me the pie recipe, the one with the apples. Love, Joan.
