Dog in a suit within an ornate frame on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A dog with a white muzzle and black patches around one eye and ear wears a red jacket, white shirt and black bow tie, posed like a formal oil portrait. The dog is set inside a carved, ornate brown frame with scrolled details and a dark green background. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft highlights on the fur, jacket and frame, and the tattoo fills most of the frame of the photo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You carry the painting down Chapel Row wrapped in a feed sack, because the rain has started and Mr Hollis at the frame shop swore the varnish would run. Behind you the colliery hooter sounds the end of the back shift, and the men come out grey-faced and nod at the bundle as if they already know what it is.

The commission came from Mrs Tennant, who wanted her late husband's old lurcher painted in his Sunday suit, because the dog had carried him home from the Ebenezer seam more times than the doctor had. You worked from a photograph and a bow tie borrowed from the chapel steward, and spent three nights getting the white blaze right against the green wall.

When you unwrap it on her parlour table, she says nothing for a long time. Then she tells you the dog was never a pit dog at all. She bought him as a pup to keep her husband company in the lamp room, and the suit was a joke between them from the wedding onwards. She touches the gilt scroll with one finger and says the frame is too grand for a dog. You tell her that is the point.

She pays you in coins still warm from her apron pocket and asks you to hang it facing the door, so the dog can see who comes in. Walking home past the tip, where the wind lifts coal dust into the sky, you think of the carved leaves on that frame, how they will keep their shape long after the damp has taken the paint from the walls of the row. On the parlour wall the dog will go on watching the door, ready to bark at whoever comes up the path first.
