Dog peeking over a heartbeat line

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black outline of a small dog's head and ears peeks above a continuous heartbeat line, with its curled tail rising on the right. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill. The tattoo is shown in black ink only against lightly tanned skin, in a plain close-up with black bars at the top and bottom of the frame.

Dear Hild,

You will laugh at me, but the dog has made himself the infirmary's chief physician. He came up the lane in the wet on the feast of Saint Brendan, a scruffy brown thing with one ear that stood up and one that gave up, and he sat on the step as though he had been sent for. Brother Cuthbert fed him bread and he has not left since.

Cuthbert has been poorly since Lent. Each night the dog climbs onto the stool beside the bed, rests his chin on the blanket and watches the old man's face, and he does not settle until the candle is out. Brother Ambrose, who still has his hearing, says the dog watches the chest rise and fall as if he were keeping time for the choir.

Last Tuesday the breathing went ragged and I was sent for. I found Cuthbert grey as tallow and the dog standing with his forepaws on the mattress, pressing his head against the old man's ribs. I put the wooden listening trumpet to Cuthbert's chest, and through it came the beat, quick and uneven, skipping like a stone across a pond. Then, slowly, it smoothed out. The dog's tail thumped against the bedframe, and the beat seemed to keep pace with it.

Cuthbert is sitting up today asking for porridge. The dog is asleep across his feet. Each morning I chalk a small mark on the flagstones where the tail struck, because I cannot think what else to do with the feeling. Come at Easter and bring your good shears. The dog needs a bath, and I think he would like to meet you.

Your brother, Anselm
