Dog portrait in gold frame on forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A realistic-style portrait of a brown and cream dog with a soft shaded face, set inside an ornate gold scrolled frame topped with a heart. A purple halo sits behind the dog, and a banner at the base of the frame carries the word GRYNET in black lettering. The colour is bold and the shading is smooth, with the frame and banner outlined in dark ink.

The dog was a Jack Russell with one ear that stood and one that didn't, and he had come with the bakery the way the bread tins had, bought secondhand from a man who swore the dog came free. He sat now on the scrubbed floor by the proving drawer, eyes fixed on the cooling rack where the first batch of rye was ticking as it shrank from its tin. Every morning he watched the crust as if it owed him money.
Teodor tore a heel off the loaf before it was cool enough to hurt and held it out. Grynet took it with the careful manners of a dog who had learned that nobody was going to shout. Beyond the window the sky over the car park went from black to the colour of a bruise, then to the pale lilac that comes just before the birds start.
The van caught on the third turn of the key. Teodor loaded the crates and didn't look back, but at the kerb he saw the dog's nose pressed to the glass of the back door, breath fogging a small circle, waiting for him to come back and finish what he had started.
