You will not believe what Mr Pellow did on Tuesday, so I will set it down plainly before the wagons leave Hull. The fair is down to four rides and a tent with a sagging roof, and the Great Ocularis is still our only real draw, though nobody pays to watch him now. He sits in the velvet chair with his eyelids propped open by two brass clips, and the crowd counts aloud. Most of them give up by twenty. Last week a boy got to forty-one before his mother dragged him off.

On Tuesday Pellow leaned close to me and said the lamp had been reflecting wrongly for weeks. I laughed. Then I looked into his pupil, where the bulb should have been a small white star, and there was a face there instead, mouth wide, screaming without a sound. It was not his. I know his face better than my own.

Pellow has not blinked since. He says the face is only waiting for the count to end, and that it grows a little more patient each night. The clips are rusting and I cannot bring myself to touch them.

Come before Saturday if you can. Bring the good scissors. I am going to cut the lamp cord tonight and see whether the face goes out with it.
