Don't blink script lettering design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the words don't blink written in flowing black script on a plain white background. The letterforms have smooth, even strokes with tall looped ascenders on the b, l and k. The composition is a single horizontal line of text, centred and unshaded, with no colour.

The man at the far end had been counting under his breath since the hooter went, and I knew he would be the one to blink. Eleven colliers stood in the yard at Ashgrove Pit with their caps in their fists and the coal still grey in the creases of their necks. I had set the camera on its three brass legs at the top of the tip, where the light fell level off the wheel, and I had drawn the slide with the care my father taught me, as though the plate might bruise.

I bent under the cloth and said the words I always said. Hold still. Don't blink. The boy beside me, Tom Ridley, who swept the offices for a penny a day and wanted nothing more in the world than to be in a photograph, took the instruction as a dare. He fixed his eyes on the lamp I had hung from the tripod leg. Its flame was a small hard star, and he did not move. Behind us the cage bells rang twice for the men going down, and a horse stamped on the cobbles near the weighbridge.
Forty seconds is a long time to keep a face still. I felt the men stiffen and then soften, the way a crowd does when it decides a thing is finished. Ned Garside coughed and turned his head a fraction toward the shaft. Only the boy kept his gaze on the flame, jaw set, lashes never lowering, while the rest of the row slackened around him.
When I pulled the slide and the plate went dark, I looked first for Ned, because he had moved, and then for the men, because I was sure of them. The print that came up in the dish a week later showed every face sharp except one. Where the lamp had been, the glass had burned white, and behind that bright hole was a boy's stare so steady that the foreman asked me to make a copy for the office wall. Tom kept the first print in his cap band until the pit closed.
