DOOMED lettering and symbols on fingers
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The word DOOMED is written in capitals across the index finger, with an eye inside a triangle on the middle finger and a small hammer-like symbol on the ring finger. All three designs are in solid black ink with simple outlines and little shading. The hand is photographed against a dark car interior, with the fingers raised toward the camera.

The snow had shut the lane for nine days when Old Tobias Pell came down from the top field with a word he could not read. It had been scratched into the frost on the gate, letters as tall as a man's hand: DOOMED. Nobody at Hollin Farm could say who had written it, and the dog would not go near the gate.

His wife, Maud, took the lamp and walked the boundary to see who else had been out. In the byre she found a smith's hammer lying in the straw, its head oddly warm, though the forge had been cold since harvest. Beside it sat a grey cat with one eye open and one eye shut, watching the lamp throw a pale triangle of light up the whitewashed wall.
The cat said nothing, which Maud took as a kindness. She carried the hammer to the anvil in the barn, and Tobias followed with a candle, complaining about his feet. "Whatever it is," he said, "it has come for the lambs." She struck the anvil once, and the note rolled out over the white fields like a bell rung under water.
In the morning the gate was clean. The lambs were counted and every one of them stood up on its legs. Tobias never learned what the word had meant, only that a man named in frost had best get on with the work. Maud kept the hammer on the windowsill, and when neighbours asked why, she said it was the only tool on the farm that had never once lied to her.
