Dotted circle and triangle tattoos on two fingers

Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands rest together over a pale, weathered surface, with small tattoos on one finger of each hand. Each tattoo combines a small open circle with a shape built from fine dots, one dotted vertical form and one dotted triangle. The ink is black, the linework is made of stippled dots, and the soft natural light and shallow focus keep the background muted.

The sports hall at Holmfield still smelled of floor polish and oranges, and nobody had thought to take down the banner that said Class of 1998 in peeling letters. I spotted Bea by the trestle table of warm sausage rolls, her name badge already slipping. She didn't say hello. She took a biro from her cardigan pocket and drew a small ring with a dotted spike beneath it on a paper napkin, the way we used to on the back of maths homework.

That was our code. A ring with a dotted spike meant meet me at the bike sheds at break. A triangle made of dots meant the library roof, and a ring underneath it meant come now, the bell's gone. We passed notes for two years under Mr Abbott's nose, and when the school shut I kept the tin of them in a shoebox that smelled of damp. Bea had kept the key, which she still carried folded in her purse like a bus ticket.

"Do you remember the last one?" she asked. I did. It was a single triangle with a ring beneath it, sent on the morning her dad moved them to Leeds. I waited at the library window all afternoon with the pen going dry in my hand, and she never came. We had never mentioned it since.

She unfolded the key on the napkin and tapped the spot beneath the triangle, where in her smallest dotted capitals she had written a word I'd never bothered to decode. It said WAIT. Then she laughed and said it had taken her twenty-six years to find a pen that wouldn't skip. I laughed too, and we stood under a banner for children who had long since grown up and gone, while the ink dried between us in small, careful dots.
