Harriet kept the crossing at Wendle Halt, where three lines of iron ran past her cottage and most nights nothing stopped. Her brother had taught her the telegraph code before the pit took him, and she kept it up alone, tapping three dots on the sill each time a lamp went by, so the men on the embankment would know someone was still counting.

One winter a stranger stepped off the last train with silver rings on every finger and no luggage. He asked for the stationmaster, who had been gone eleven years, and Harriet told him so. He only smiled and said the dead were punctual in their way, and that he had a message for the crossing-keeper that could not wait for morning. He wanted the key tapped: three short, three short, three short, which meant come quickly.

She had never sent that signal. Her brother had used it once, the night of the roof fall, and every man on the shift had come running. Harriet's hand shook on the brass, but she tapped it out, and far off past the bridge something answered with the same three beats, then three more, then silence. The stranger nodded as if he had expected nothing else.

When the sun came up the rails were empty and frost lay white on the sleepers. On the sill of the crossing house, three small dots had been scratched into the wood beside her cup, neat and evenly spaced, and nobody in the village could say who had done it. Harriet left them there, and every night after she tapped nothing at all, because the message had been received.
