Star constellation on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph from behind of a person with short dark hair, showing a delicate constellation tattoo across the upper back near the shoulder blade. The design is made of small dots and thin connecting lines, with one larger star-like mark along the path. The ink appears dark grey or black against the skin, and the composition is soft and centred on the back with a plain light background.

Pass me that kettle and mind the step, because I'll not tell this twice, and the lad who ought to be listening is asleep on the coal sacks. Nineteen fifty-nine it was, the Marigold Rose out of Hull with a hold full of pig iron and a compass that had gone soft in the head.

Our boy was Tobias Lark, fifteen and clever with his hands. Every night he sat by the scullery porthole with a bradawl and a tin of lamp black and pricked little holes into the galley bulkhead, one for each star he could name from his uncle's chart. He joined them with a fine pencil line, and where the brightest one sat he put a small cross, because he said that one never moved and a man could trust it like a bollard.

Then the fog came down off the Dogger Bank, thick enough to swallow the masthead lamp, and the iron in our hold swung the needle round like a drunk at closing time. The mate wanted to anchor and wait. Tobias came up the companionway with chalk on his fingers and said the crossed star on the galley wall would hold us north for anyone with eyes. We sighted it through a torn bit of cloud near four in the morning, and by first light we were off the Maas light, bold as you like.

They broke the Rose up at Blyth six years after. I went down to see the wall before the breakers came, and the dots were still there under the grease, the lines faded to ghosts. Every star was joined but one, a lone dot with nothing running to it. I asked Tobias why he'd left it bare, and he only shrugged and said a chart with no gaps in it was just a picture.
