Dotted hearts band on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black dotted line wraps around a pale forearm in a looping band, with small solid hearts scattered along it and a larger outlined heart near the lower edge. The work is built from individual dots and small shapes rather than continuous lines, with no shading. Only black ink is visible against plain, light skin and a soft neutral background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth had been piping since half four, when the kitchen still smelled of cold flour and the ovens had not yet decided to be warm. Forty shortbread rounds lay on the steel bench in two straight rows, and she held the bag the way her aunt had taught her, two fingers on the nozzle and the wrist barely moving. Each dot had to be the same size. Each dot had to sit just where the last one ended, so the line looked poured rather than placed.

The order was for a wedding in Otley: a band of black sugar dots around the edge of every biscuit, with a small solid heart set into the gap every fourth dot. Jamal, who had started on Monday, watched from the sink with his sleeves pushed up. "Why the hearts?" he asked. "Because the bride asked for them," Ruth said, and then, because the question had sounded like a real one, "Because a line of dots is only ever a line until someone stops to look at it."

By the time the sky over the car park had turned the colour of weak tea, she had finished thirty-nine. The fortieth she left until last. In the space where the band met itself, she piped a larger heart, outlined rather than solid, the way a clasp sits on a bracelet. It was not on the order sheet, and she had not done anything like it in eleven years of mornings.

Jamal came over with the tray for the cooling racks and stopped. "They'll never notice that one," he said. Ruth slid the last biscuit onto the rack and wiped her fingers on her apron. "No," she said. "But she will, and she'll know somebody meant it."
