Small yin yang on the wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a hand raised above a wrist with a small, solid black yin yang symbol. The circle is filled with black ink and a small white dot sits in each half, with fine detail along the edges. The soft, plain background keeps focus on the wrist and the tattoo.

The lift in Mercer Tower broke every second Tuesday, so people took the stairs, and the stairs were split down the middle. The east stair climbed and the west stair came down, and nobody had ever told the builders why. Old Mrs Dunmore on the ninth floor said it was so the sun and the rain could never meet on the same step.

Rhian lived on the east side, on the fourteenth floor, and painted signs for the chip shop below. Ivo lived on the west side, on the fifteenth, and mended clocks that nobody came back for. They met each evening on the half landing where the two stairs turned into one another. She would be going up with a tin of white gloss under her arm. He would be coming down with a jar of black from his bench. Most nights they swapped a little of whatever they had too much of.
In the winter the power went out for three days. The landing was as black as the inside of a boot. Rhian stood on the half landing with a torch that had no battery left, heard Ivo coming down the west stair and her own feet on the east, and understood that neither of them could tell which way the other was going. So she knelt and drew a circle in chalk on the concrete, filled one half with her white and the other with his black, and left a dot of each in the opposite half, the way two people look at each other across a table. When the lights came back, Ivo stood at the edge of the circle with his hand on the rail. He did not go down, and she did not go up. The circle is still there under the scuffed paint, a little worn, where the two stairs meet.
